Croma Concrete: A Revolutionary Bench System

Designers Peter Istvan Varga and Renata Paunoch Redefine Public Seating

Introducing Croma Concrete, a modular bench system that transforms public spaces into versatile meeting points and urban lounging spots. Designed by Peter Istvan Varga and Renata Paunoch, this award-winning design combines innovation, aesthetics, and functionality.

Originating from a commission by Tiba Architects, Croma Concrete has become the best-selling product of its creators. The design process involved extensive brainstorming and development, resulting in a unique bench system that stands out in the market.

The strength of Croma lies in its modularity. Composed of five basic modules, it can form large, block-like clusters, accommodating several groups of people simultaneously. This feature, coupled with its ability to subtly divide space, makes Croma an ideal urban meeting point and lounging spot.

Despite its complex form, Croma boasts a heavy-duty structure and a surprisingly fine surface. It is crafted from high-performance concrete, developed over a year and a half, ensuring long-term durability. The bench has undergone rigorous load testing, demonstrating impressive compression and tensile strengths. Furthermore, its surface is coated with a water-repellent impregnation, simplifying cleaning and maintenance.

Each module measures 1200 mm x 640 mm x 450 mm and weighs between 230-300 kg. The total size depends on the arrangement of the modules. The bench is available in white, with a natural concrete finish and surface protection. An optional rubber seat can also be added for extra comfort.

Croma's versatility extends to its interaction. It is a self-explanatory object that can accommodate individuals or groups, serving as a platform for various activities, from quick lunches to deep conversations. Its modular design allows for endless assembly options, enabling it to fit any public space or need.

The development of Croma took place over five months in Budapest, Hungary. It involved research into new concrete mixtures, resulting in a unique High Performance Concrete. This material provides a strong, smooth surface, resistant to weather and graffiti, ensuring the bench's longevity.

The design of Croma presented several challenges, including creating expressive outdoor objects from concrete that are easy to set up and offer a high degree of flexibility in shaping a space. However, these challenges were successfully overcome, leading to the creation of a bench system that is not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing.

Croma Concrete has been recognized for its innovative design, winning the Silver A' Street and City Furniture Design Award in 2017. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation, and Croma certainly fits the bill.

In conclusion, Croma Concrete is a testament to the power of innovative design in transforming public spaces. Its unique properties, coupled with its aesthetic appeal, make it a valuable addition to any urban environment. It is a shining example of how design can enhance our everyday experiences and interactions.
